Autumnal Weddings: Ideas and Inspiration

Weddings are a fabulous excuse to get as creative and extravagant as possible when it comes to themes, colour schemes and fun little flourishes and when we slide into a different season there is no shortage of inspiration for dressing, planning, and designing your wedding around the changes that the new time of year brings.

Understandably the summer months are a favourite for weddings with it’s bright, vibrant colours and festival themed attire, perfect for hot sunshine days, but now we are starting to move into more warmer, atmospheric and romantic tones that autumn provides and we can already visualise dreamy décor with succulent and rich colour schemes.

So if you’re planning an Autumn wedding here are some ideas to get your inspiration flowing for this gorgeous season.

Soft, whimsical, floaty, lacey autumnal style wedding dresses give that touch of pure chic and style. And when adding some faux fur, feather capes and boho style crowns, you will look like you have stepped out of a fairy tale.

Autumn flowers are always rich with colour and can make exquisite bouquets when matched with muted tones. Foxgloves, antique roses, and dried ferns are just some of the beautiful flowers to get you started on your flower journey.

There are some hidden gems when it comes to locations and the autumn can turn these venues into a magical experience. Working with nature and finding somewhere that oozes natural tones like barns, stone farmhouses or even a castle! Yes, there are even castles you can get married in!

Whether you love Halloween or not, pumpkins are a great decoration for things like table settings and also make for fun and quirky décor when placed down an aisle. The pumpkin can also be painted to match your colour scheme perfectly and fits seamlessly with the season. If the spooky thing isn’t for you, try painting them in blues, creams, and golds to give them a more elegant feel.

Using fruit for things like table numbers can add a fun but simple feel while still being affordable. Pairs in particular look gorgeous when used in this way! Beautiful bunting in autumnal tones or dried flowers in arcs, wreaths, flower clouds from the ceiling or a wonderful flower wall (perfect for the wedding selfie!) will add that special look for the day.

The evenings will be a little cooler so how about some drink inspiration to warm the soul? Hot mulled cider or wine tables are really popular with guests at this time of year and provide a little festive feel too! This is a perfect way to keep the guests feeling cosy in between the schedule of the day! And so the kids don’t miss out, you can do something similar with apple juice!

Think flavour! Cinnamon, caramel, and gingerbread spring to mind when we think of Autumn and these spices can be used for biscuits, cakes, drinks, and some yummy popcorn!

Feathers, fairy lights and trees! These can all set the scene for a dreamy, fairy tale style wedding and create a warm, inviting place to spend the day with family and friends (and the children will love it too).

Guest books or even a wedding wish tree is a great opportunity for your guests to send well wishes, share a memory, or write what they thought of the day! All these can be done on leaves (either fresh or card cut in the shape of leaves) which is a graceful nod the autumn.

Fresh leaves, pinecones and cinnamon sticks are also another nice choice for table settings Tip: dip the leaves in gold paint to give it a touch of sparkle!

Succulent, rich, and warming foods are an excellent choice for your guests on these cooler evenings. Seasonal vegetables, pies, squash, hog roasts or a spot of game, your guests will be in for a feast fit for royalty – don’t forget to have your vegetarian and vegan options too!

And the “piece de la resistance” or in other words, the cake. Embellish your autumnal cake with succulent berries, fruits and herbs and dress with autumnal flowers. Wedding cake no longer needs to be the standard fruit cake, you can really “mix” it up! Using cinnamon, nutmeg, figs, apples, and walnut can really spice things up.

Not only is autumn a stunning time of year to get married, here are a few more reasons why the autumn is a perfect time to walk down the aisle…..

  • As weather goes in the UK, the autumn months are pretty predictable and provide gorgeous natural lighting for your all-important photos (your photographer will be in their element).
  • The seasons colours are just stunning with red, oranges and greens, which when working with golds and bronze to add some glamour to your day will look stunning!

Darker evenings can mean fireworks, sparklers, and fire pits and these things are always so much fun and will also be great for photo opportunities!
