My Top 10 Tips To Protect Your Hair This Summer

Summer can be such a brutal season for our hair, not to mention if you have an upcoming wedding! Here are my top tips to protect your hair from sun exposure, chlorine, and saltwater:

 1. Wear a Hat or Scarf: Cover your hair with a wide-brimmed hat or a lightweight scarf to provide shade and minimise direct sun exposure.

 2. Use UV Protection Products: Apply hair products that contain UV filters or SPF to protect your hair from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. Look for leave-in conditioners, serums, or sprays specifically formulated for sun protection. The Olaplex No. 3 Hair Protector is great for strengthening hair and reducing breakage.

 3. Rinse Before Swimming: Before entering a pool, ocean, or any water source, rinse your hair with clean water. Wetting your hair beforehand helps to minimise the absorption of chlorine or saltwater.

 4. Apply Leave-In Conditioner: Prior to swimming, apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to create a protective barrier on your hair. This can help prevent chlorine or saltwater from penetrating and damaging your hair. Try the Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil for this.

 5. Tie Up Your Hair: Keeping your hair tied up or in a bun while swimming can help reduce exposure to chlorine or saltwater. This also helps prevent tangles and breakage caused by the water.

 6. Rinse Immediately After Swimming: After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with clean water to remove any chlorine or saltwater residue. Follow up with a gentle shampoo and conditioner to cleanse and moisturise your hair.

 7. Deep Condition Regularly: Use deep conditioning treatments or hair masks once a week to replenish moisture and repair any damage caused by sun, chlorine, or saltwater exposure. The Maria Nila Structure Repair Hair Masque is perfect for all round repairing and strengthing.

8. Limit Heat Styling: Minimise the use of heat styling tools on your hair, as they can further damage already exposed hair. Opt for natural hairstyles or heatless styling methods instead. Always use thermal protection spray before using any thermal tools.

 9. Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated internally helps keep your hair hydrated as well. Drink an adequate amount of water to maintain the health and moisture balance of your hair.

 10. Consult a Professional: If you frequently swim or have specific concerns, consult a hairstylist or trichologist for personalised advice and recommendations on protecting your hair from sun, chlorine, and saltwater. By following these tips, you can effectively protect your hair from sun exposure, chlorine, and saltwater, keeping it healthy and beautiful.
